What I do

Three surfaces, one toolbox.

Most of my week is software - a browser, a phone, or the screen in a dashboard. Different surfaces, the same habit of getting something working and then making it hold up.

Web applications

Angular and TypeScript front ends, server-rendered where it earns its keep. Built to load quickly on a phone signal and to still make sense a year later.

A net-worth tracker for iOS and Android where the data never leaves the phone. Every account and transaction is AES-256 encrypted on the device, the key sits in the Keychain or the Android Keystore, and there is no cloud account to create and no bank password to hand over.

Audi & VW

The features it left the factory without.

A lot of what a modern Audi or VW can do is already in its wiring - the module, the switch or the licence is the part that is missing. Retrofits add the hardware, coding makes the car treat it as its own, and updates keep what is already in the dashboard worth using.

Android screen

A modern touchscreen where the original unit was: current maps, streaming and phone mirroring in a car that never offered any of it - with the steering wheel buttons still doing what they always did.

Cruise control

The factory stalk fitted and coded, not a bolt-on switch. A long motorway run stops being work for your right foot, the speed stays where you put it, and the car shows it on its own dashboard.

Tyre pressure monitoring

The car tells you a tyre is going down before you can feel it in the steering. That is a warning light instead of a blowout, plus the fuel and the even tyre wear that only come from correct pressures.

Maps & MMI updates

Navigation data brought up to date inside the car's own unit - new roads, renamed streets, roundabouts that actually exist - so the built-in screen stops being the least accurate map in the car.

Speed camera & POI updates

Fixed cameras, fuel, charging points and services loaded into the factory navigation as points of interest. The warning and the search result come from the car's screen rather than a phone stuck to the windscreen.

Coding & activations

Features the car left the factory with but never had switched on, and retrofitted modules coded so the car accepts them without a warning light.

Diagnostics & fault finding

The fault memory read properly, then explained in words rather than codes.

For the passenger, and only where the law allows it.

Work that changes how a vehicle behaves is carried out on the owner's instruction, and only where it is legal for the road it is used on.
